Pureology :: Hydrating Your Hair & Body

What causes hair damage??
Here are a few things that you probably didn't think twice about... I sure didn't!

Chlorine - swimming pools | However, while it's at work killing germs, it is also killing your hair's health status. Chlorine strips hair of its natural oils, which are there to protect hair from damage in the first place. Without oil, hair can become dry, frizzy and brittle.

Hair damage from salt water | You’re probably wondering what could be so bad about taking a dip in the ocean. Isn’t salt water healing? Yes, it helps to detox the skin, reduce swelling and treat wounds, among many other benefits. But overexposure to salt water can wreak havoc on your hairYour hair’s water content is what makes it stretchy, elastic and moisturized — kind of like your skin. And, similar to your skin and the rest of your body, your hair can become ‘dehydrated’ and dry if too much moisture is lost through evaporation. And even more so if that moisture is not replenished. As the sea has high salt content, it is osmotic, meaning that it leaches water out of your hair. The result? Dry, parched and brittle locks. The hair becomes dull, tangled, rough feeling and can be hard to comb or brush out. If you have color in your hair, salt water damage would give it a very hard texture. Once you shampooed your hair, you may even notice that it takes longer to blow-dry or you’re having problems getting your locks to curl or hold a style. In its worst form, salt water damage causes the ends of the hair to split, and breakage can begin.

Sun-damaged hair | Overexposure to sun changes the color, texture and look of your hair. Your natural hair color becomes less vivid. If you color your hair, the change is more striking: brunettes go brassy, redheads turn orange and blonds become peroxide yellow. Sun-damaged hair is parched, making it coarse and frizzy. Because your hair is so stressed, it is more difficult to style. Plus you’ll experience everything from split ends to breakage.

Over-brushing | Think 100 strokes a day will make your hair shiny and full? Think again.
Over-brushing your hair can cause split ends and breakage, with the over-brushing causing just too much consistent friction for hair to handle. Cheap brushes don't help either, causing snags and tangles that are hard to get out and resulting in broken hair and split ends.

Oh my, right?! That was my reaction. Living in Hawaii, I exposed my hair to chlorine, salt water and more sun than I have in a while. So I really need to help my hair get healthy and stay healthy. And who knew there was such a thing as over-brushing your hair?

To help my hair get hydrated again, I started using Pureology Serious Colour Care products. Let me tell you, my hair hasn't felt this re-hydrated before.

Life is Complicated... Your Hair Care Shouldn't be!
